Is your gym membership making you fat

You decide to sign up to a 12 month gym membership you attend the first week with so much motivation then the second week comes along then the excuses and life starts to happen soon as you know you haven’t been to the gym in months… sound familiar ??

Sometimes the excuses not to attend will have the gym membership not being used and hundreds if not thousands of dollars get wasted. Clients end up falling back into old bad habits.

I’ve had so many clients that had or still have gym memberships and barely use it. I always ask the question when I see my clients for the first time… Do you go to the gym ? I ask the question so I can get an idea if they are currently active or intend on using their membership between our PT sessions.

The biggest problem gyms have are the lack of support and how unfriendly they can make the gym environment feel. A lot of my female clients have told me the gym makes them feel very self-conscious and prefer to see a PT in private then feel “eyes are staring at them trying to exercise at the gym ” .

Even though most gyms offer a free PT session when you sign up to a membership and the gym staff will show you around and show you how to use the equipment but is that really enough support ? Some gyms also offer classes of course but a lot of women can’t bring themselves to actually attend one.  

The common reasons I get from clients when asked why they don’t use their gym membership :

  • Makes me feel uncomfortable as I am not as fit as other women
  • I had a bad experience with a PT I used at the gym
  • I get bored of the machines and don’t know how to use any of the machines in the weights area
  • I stopped going as the only time I have is during peak hours at the gym and it is so busy most machines are taken up
  • I feel overwhelmed when I stepped foot into the gym
  • I don’t know what to do there

Yes I have had these reasons told to me by clients all the time. I always encourage my clients whom have a membership to attend at least 2 – 3 times per week to keep active and burn those calories needed. If clients request I will put together a gym workout for them to follow , so the excuses go out the window.

Don’t get me wrong there are people that the gym is just part of their life and  fitness is everything to them and attend frequently and love what the gym does towards their wellbeing. Most woman I have seen lack the confidence as it is when they decide to join a gym, most of the time those are the ones that will end up cancelling their membership and keep with a trainer as they feel they can train more on their own level.

Gyms don’t have to be a place where it makes you feel overwhelmed or confused on what to do . if you would like to give it a shot and keep attending then I recommend you speak to the staff their and ask if someone can walk you through the machines again to help find exercise that best suit your goals as gym staff are always happy to help.
